Hey there, fellow adventurer! Are you ready to swap your screen time for breathtaking mountain vistas and feel the invigorating kiss of fresh air? It seems like everyone is lacing up their boots these days, and honestly, we get it! Hiking has soared in popularity, becoming a beloved trend for those yearning to embrace an active lifestyle and reconnect with Mother Nature. Whether you’re planning a soulful solo date to clear your head, moving on from a “situationship” (you know the one!), or simply eager to witness the Philippines’ unparalleled natural beauty, the mountains are calling, and you absolutely must go!

It doesn’t matter if you’re a lone wolf joining a spirited group of strangers, a couple looking to strengthen your bond, or a barkada (that’s Filipino for a tight-knit group of friends!) ready to forge unforgettable memories – the trails welcome everyone. What could be more epic than testing your limits and then celebrating your triumphs together at the peak?

Feeling a little overwhelmed about where to start? Don’t worry! The vibrant hiking community in the Philippines is incredibly welcoming. You can easily dive into online groups, especially on platforms like Facebook. Think of communities like Philippine Group of Mountaineers and Akyat Bundok as your friendly neighborhood guides, brimming with tips, organized trips, and fellow enthusiasts. Just a quick friendly reminder, though: always double-check the legitimacy of any accounts you engage with to ensure a safe and smooth journey!

Decoding the Trail Talk: Essential Hiking Terms for Newbies

Before you set your sights on that perfect beginner’s summit, let’s get you fluent in some essential hiking lingo. Understanding these terms will not only boost your confidence but also ensure you’re fully prepared for the adventure ahead!

Your First Love: The “Mother Mountain”

First up is the delightful term, the “mother mountain.” This isn’t just any mountain; it’s the very first peak you ever conquer! Imagine it like your first love – your mother mountain often sets the tone for your entire mountaineering journey, inspiring you to explore more or perhaps solidify your passion for the outdoors. That’s why picking a mountain that perfectly matches your energy and comfort level as a first-timer is absolutely crucial. It’s about setting yourself up for success and a truly magical initial experience!

Reaching for the Stars: The “Summit”

Next, we have the “summit” – a term as iconic to hikers as “home run” is to baseball players! This refers to the majestic peak of the mountain. For every hiker, reaching the summit is the ultimate goal, a triumphant moment where every drop of sweat and every challenging step pays off handsomely. Picture yourself standing there, gazing at a panoramic, majestic view from above – isn’t that a feeling worth chasing?

Your Path to Glory: The “Trail”

Before you can bask in the glory of the summit, you’ll embark on a journey along the mountain’s designated path, known as the “trail.” And trust us, no two trails are ever quite the same! Some might greet you with open spaces and fewer trees, offering expansive views, while others transform into muddy, slippery labyrinths, especially after a good rain. You might even encounter steep sections, often affectionately called “assault” portions, that demand a little extra grit and determination. But hey, that’s where the fun really begins!

Knowing Your Limits: “Trail Classes” and “Difficulty Scale”

To help guide trekkers, trails are smartly categorized into five “trail classes.” Class 1 is your gentle stroll in the park, typically requiring no technical skills as the terrain is super easy to navigate. As you climb the numerical ladder, say to Class 3 or 4, you’ll find yourself needing more technical prowess and perhaps a bit of scrambling. It’s like leveling up in your favorite video game!

Beyond the trail class, it’s also super important to familiarize yourself with the “difficulty scale.” This scale ranges from 1 (easiest, think a leisurely walk) to 9 (most challenging, requiring serious mountaineering skills). You might wonder why it stops at 9 and not a nice round 5 or 10. Well, this specific scale was thoughtfully recommended by the revered Pinoy Mountaineer back in 2007. It’s a comprehensive measure that takes into account the trail’s steepness, the expected duration of your hike, and whether you’ll need specialized technical skills, like using ropes. Understanding these scales empowers you to choose an adventure that’s just right for your current fitness and skill level!

Your First Ascent: Top Beginner-Friendly Mountains in the Philippines

Now that you’re armed with the basics and ready to conquer, it’s time for the exciting part: choosing your very own mother mountain! We’ve curated a list of beginner-friendly peaks that promise incredible views and unforgettable experiences. Get ready to explore!

Mt. Batulao, Nasugbu, Batangas: The Scenic Starter

Just one convenient bus ride away from Manila, you can instantly kickstart your hiking journey at Mt. Batulao in Nasugbu, Batangas. This mountain is a feast for the eyes, boasting incredible scenic beauty that will make your Instagram feed sing! With a trail class of 3 and a 4/9 difficulty level, it’s the perfect playground to experience a mix of easygoing paths and slightly more challenging sections. You’ll learn how to maneuver your steps and position yourself confidently without feeling overwhelmed.

With a little bit of proper body conditioning – think brisk walks or light jogging before your big day – you can reach the summit of this mountain in about two to four hours. Not too shabby for a first-timer, right?

Mt. Batulao offers a “new trail” that is mostly flat yet subtly slanted, making it incredibly welcoming for beginners. This route is also ideal for those who are still getting used to high-altitude views or might be a tad nervous about heights. However, if you’re feeling a bit more daring, the “old trail” presents rappelling sections with steeper cliffs and views that can be much more dizzying – for the truly adventurous souls!

Fun fact: Did you know that some parts of singer Aicelle Santos‘ “Kapangyarihan ng Pag-ibig” music video were beautifully shot right here on Mt. Batulao? Talk about a celebrity seal of approval!

Mt. Kulis, Tanay, Rizal: The All-Ages Adventure

Among the top contenders for the easiest mountains to climb in the Philippines is Mt. Kulis in Tanay, Rizal, boasting a super manageable 2/9 difficulty level. What makes this mountain truly special? It has no age limit! You can bring absolutely anyone along – whether it’s a curious kid, a wise elderly mountaineer, or even your beloved four-legged companion. Everyone is welcome to climb with open arms and zero restrictions!

Since the hike here isn’t a gruelling test of endurance, all you really need is a light, comfortable day-hike bag and your readiness to traverse the gentle three-kilometer trail.

Because of its incredibly manageable nature, expect a good number of hikers to be visiting Mt. Kulis, especially on weekends. To truly avoid the big crowds and snag the best photo spots for those stunning social media snaps, it’s best to head out early. You’ll be surprised – it only takes about one to two hours to complete the hike!

Here’s another fun tidbit: This mountain is singer Zephanie’s mother mountain, and with its beginner-friendly trail, it just might become yours too!

Mt. Daraitan, Tanay, Rizal: The Active Lifestyle Challenge

They say if you conquer this mountain on your first hike, then nothing should ever scare you from climbing more! While some might argue that Mt. Daraitan isn’t the absolute easiest choice for beginners, it’s absolutely perfect for those just starting their hiking journeys but who already boast an active lifestyle. Think of it as your next exciting fitness challenge!

Nestled in Tanay, Rizal, Mt. Daraitan proudly stands as part of the ever-resilient Sierra Madre mountain range. It offers a delightful mix of challenge and accessibility for beginners, with a trail class that impressively ranges from 1-3. To break that down for you, Class 1 means easy walking, Class 2 involves hiking on slightly rugged terrain, and Class 3 might require a bit of scrambling with your hands for balance – all clearly noted by Pinoy Mountaineer, our trusted guide!

You’ll encounter a blend of rocky and muddy trails, so travel light and smartly! During the rainy season, the mountain becomes extra challenging, so be prepared for some slippery sections. A golden tip for descents: go heel first to ensure maximum safety in case you slip! Always pack a first-aid kit just in case you get a minor scrape from the rocks. Since rain is quite common in the area, you’ll want to pack clothes that are quick to dry, like those made from synthetic fibers such as nylon or polyester.

Planning an early morning hike to catch the sunrise? Don’t forget a flashlight or headlamp to navigate the dark with ease. And, of course, a little pre-hike stretching and active resting will do wonders for your body!

It typically takes about three to five hours to reach Mt. Daraitan’s summit. Yes, it might sound a bit long and tiring for newbies, but trust us, once you get there and witness the breathtaking view, you’ll realize it was totally worth every single step of the climb! To seal your Mt. Daraitan experience with an unforgettable flourish, make sure to take a refreshing dip at its incredible cave in Tinipak River. Here, you can luxuriate in the river’s cold, crystal-clear water and marvel at the mountain’s stunning rock formations. It’s the perfect reward after a rewarding trek!

Did you know that Ben&Ben band members and real-life couple Pat Lasaten and Agnes Reoma actually hiked this very mountain in 2024? Talk about couple goals!

Mt. Balagbag, Rodriguez, Rizal: The Family-Friendly Backdrop

Many might recognize this mountain as the iconic shooting location for the film Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral. But let me tell you, Mt. Balagbag offers so much more than cinematic fame!

This gem from Rodriguez, Rizal, could very well be your family’s next unforgettable getaway. It’s even senior-citizen approved, and for those with adventurous spirits, you can bring your 4×4 vehicles right up for an amazing camping experience! With a comfortable difficulty level of 3/9 and a trail class of 1 to 2, this mountain doesn’t throw any daunting challenges your way. Mt. Balagbag can typically be hiked in a total of five hours, and throughout your trail, you’ll be treated to picturesque waterfalls and refreshing rivers – perfect for a quick cool-down!

Since it’s largely an open trail with minimal tree cover, it’s a smart move to wear breathable clothes and schedule your trek either early in the morning or late afternoon to escape the scorching mid-day sun. Once you reach the peak, Mt. Balagbag’s elevation offers a truly spectacular view, allowing you to gaze upon the sprawling urban landscape of Ortigas and other parts of Metro Manila. It’s a stunning reminder of how close nature truly is!

Even before the hiking trend exploded, Kapamilya star Erich Gonzales hiked Mt. Balagbag in 2018 alongside her co-star Janella Salvador, affectionately describing it as her “happy place.” If it’s good enough for these stars, it’s definitely good enough for us!

Mt. Mariglem, Cabangan, Zambales: The Coastal Charm

Here’s another open trail that’s quickly gaining traction on our list: Mt. Mariglem in Cabangan, Zambales. This stunning peak, which only opened its trails to the public in 2023, instantly captivated hikers with its incredibly beautiful scenery. Imagine this: you’re hiking, and you’re treated to sweeping views of the area’s coastline, majestic mountain peaks, and even a shimmering glimpse of the West Philippine Sea. How’s that for a reward?

This is considered a minor climb, taking only two to three hours to reach the summit, with a trail class of 1-3. While generally manageable, the trail does include several “assaults,” particularly on steep and rocky descents. But don’t let that deter you; the trail itself is incredibly enjoyable and straightforward, making it a perfect introduction to varied terrains.

The main challenge here isn’t the technicality, but often the heat! Hikers enthusiastically recommend reaching Mt. Mariglem’s summit by sunrise to truly beat the intense sun and enjoy cooler temperatures. So, pack plenty of water, plus essentials like a fan, umbrella, or cap to protect yourself from those glorious rays!

Expect your footwear to get wet during exciting river crossings, as most rivers are conveniently located near the jump-off point. Apart from a refreshing river swim, another exhilarating adventure hikers absolutely love here is cliff jumping – talk about an adrenaline rush!

Social media influencer Kimpoy Feliciano even posted a vibrant vlog documenting his hike up Mt. Mariglem. Despite the evident heat in the video, the vlogger enthusiastically shared that the breeze felt incredibly refreshing and strongly advised starting early to avoid the most intense sun. Take it from a pro!

Mt. Pulag, Benguet: The Sea of Clouds Dream

Who would have ever thought that the highest mountain in Luzon could proudly secure a spot on a beginner-friendly list? You heard that right! It will only take about four to six hours to hike to perch the summit of Mt. Pulag, boasting a trail class of 1-2 and a welcoming 3/9 difficulty level. Prepare to be amazed!

Nestled in Benguet, Mt. Pulag is an absolute favorite among hikers, and for good reason: its breathtaking glory! Imagine witnessing the sun rising above a thick, ethereal sea of clouds on a clear day – it’s a truly spiritual experience that stays with you long after the hike.

Beyond its iconic views, Mt. Pulag was also the previous home of Pugal, the online sensation cat that went viral earlier this year! Pugal famously conquered this mountain, joining mountaineers and fearlessly guiding them on the trails. If a cat can do it, so can you!

Through the Ambangeg Trail, which is widely considered a minor hike, the climb doesn’t demand extensive technical skills or prior hiking experience. Yes, there are “assault” sections, but they are relatively mild and totally manageable for eager beginners. The distance from the jump-off point to Pulag’s summit is about eight kilometers, so you should definitely be prepared for a good, long walk. As you ascend, expect colder temperatures, thinner air, and stronger winds – it’s all part of the unique Pulag experience!

With the mountain’s majestic landscape as your backdrop, you’ll definitely want to curate your picture-perfect outfit. Choose one that keeps you warm yet remains comfortable enough for the long walk ahead. Layering is your best friend here!

The film Roadtrip (2024) was actually shot in Mt. Pulag, telling the heartwarming story of four friends on a hiking journey together. Actress and writer of the film, Candy Pangilinan, even shared a vlog detailing their trek to the filming spots. Pangilinan repeatedly mentioned how incredibly cold it was throughout their adventure. While the actress found the hike challenging, she still expressed her profound appreciation for Mt. Pulag’s unparalleled beauty. It’s a testament to the mountain’s captivating charm, even in its chilly embrace!

Aw-Asen Falls, Ilocos Sur: The Waterfall Wonderland

Alright, alright, we know what you’re thinking: “It’s not a mountain!” And you’re right! But Aw-Asen Falls still undeniably deserves a coveted spot on this list!

Because of its absolutely picturesque view, it has swiftly become a wildly popular destination among climbing enthusiasts. The hike to these majestic falls takes only about two to three hours, with a 4/9 difficulty level and a trail class of 1-2. Aw-Asen’s trail is notably steep with very few flat sections, so expect a dynamic mix of uphill and downhill paths. While some sections are already conveniently paved, most of the way to the falls is comprised of stairs, which surprisingly makes it incredibly beginner-friendly! A light pack, perfect for both hiking and a refreshing swim, is highly recommended.

The absolute best part of this climb? You will be greeted by the utterly majestic view of the falls, a sight that will surely inspire you to explore even more mountains and waterfalls. After all, this isn’t just any waterfall; it is proudly the highest falls in the Ilocos Region. Imagine the photos you’ll get!

This stunning waterfall was famously featured in Biyahe ni Drew’s episode last July, where Drew Arellano himself passionately talked about why it attracts so many hikers and how to get there. He famously said, “Kahit na walang filter yung mata, ang ganda visually,” referring to how the falls look even more stunning up close compared to mere photos on social media. (Even though your eyes have no filters, Aw-Asen Falls still looks visually beautiful.) Now that’s a ringing endorsement!

There you have it, future mountaineer! Your introduction to the thrilling world of Philippine hiking. These trails offer not just physical challenges but also profound connections with nature, stunning views, and a chance to truly discover what you’re capable of. So, what are you waiting for? Pick your adventure, pack your bags, and let your first incredible ascent begin!
