Sorsogon City Steps Up: Worldwide Photowalk Captures Soul and Stories

Sorsogon City isn’t just a dot on the map anymore; it’s bursting onto the global stage, and it’s doing so with a camera lens in hand! This vibrant city is gearing up to host its very own edition of Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk, an event that’s practically a legend in the photography world.

Imagine this: over 24,000 participants, more than 1,000 locations, all united by one passion – photography. That’s the magic Scott Kelby, the renowned photographer and educator, started, and it’s now a global creative tradition. Photographers and artists from every corner of the planet come together, not just to snap pictures, but to weave compelling narratives through their images. And now, Sorsogon City is ready to add its unique chapter to this incredible saga!

Local Powerhouses Unite for a Cause

This isn’t just any photowalk; it’s a movement! We’re talking about the formidable Kurit-Lagting Art Collective, teaming up with Delta Beta Omega (DBO) and the Concerned Artists of the Philippines Bicol Chapter (CAP Bicol) to spearhead the Sorsogon leg. It’s a fantastic showcase of local talent and collaborative spirit, happening simultaneously with countless other cities around the globe. How cool is that?

The energy is palpable, and the support is widespread! Organized through the Sorsogon Initiatives for Culture and Arts Development (SICAD), this photowalk has garnered fantastic backing from local favorites like Gadgetry City, Soffie’s, Koala Project, Project Mars, Rhymes of Peg (ROP), the Sorsogon Arts Council, and Kuya Tonzkie Foodhouse. This diverse group is coming together to celebrate creativity, powerful storytelling, and, crucially, cultural awareness. It’s truly a community effort, isn’t it?

By the way, have you heard about the incredible collaboration where Bicol artists teamed up with child rights advocates in a virtual arts workshop? It’s another inspiring example of how art can ignite youth expression and cultural understanding. Talk about making a difference!

More Than Just a Walk: A Journey of Truth and Culture

What makes Sorsogon’s photowalk extra special? It’s designed to be a free and inclusive creative gathering. It kicks off with an engaging Community Participatory Creative Talk, setting the stage for what’s to come. Then, cameras in hand, participants embark on a journey, exploring the cultural, historical, and everyday life of Sorsogon. Sounds like an adventure, right?

The organizers are super passionate about empowering both budding and seasoned photographers. They’re integrating vital elements like truth-telling, civic awareness, and cultural sensitivity into the experience. This isn’t just about snapping pretty pictures; it’s an invitation to treat photography as a poetic and ethical act of storytelling. How often do you get to participate in something so profound?

And speaking of stories, did you know that Donsol’s butanding tourist spots were featured on Sorsogon’s 125th founding commemorative stamp? It’s a beautiful testament to the province’s pride and heritage, captured for generations to see!

The Route: A Tapestry of Sorsogon Life

Ready to trace the path of these visual explorers? The photowalk will begin at the Sorsogon State University Pavilion, a hub of knowledge and creativity. From there, it winds along Magsaysay Street, soaking in the local vibe as it passes through Sulucan, Salog, Burabod, and Polvorista.

The journey continues, crossing through the bustling Hollywood area and the vibrant Public Market, before moving across the scenic Sirangan area. Finally, it exits into the breathtaking Coastal area, culminating at the iconic Sorsogon Baywalk (Rompeolas) after a serene stretch along the Coastal Road. What a route to capture the heart and soul of Sorsogon, right?

Oh, and on that note, you absolutely have to see how Sorsogon’s scenic sea view road dike is set to protect coastal barangays. It’s not just about safety; it’s about preserving the province’s natural beauty for everyone to enjoy!

Meet Your Guide: Venus Ashtred Briñola

Leading this year’s Sorsogon Photowalk is none other than the incredibly talented Venus Ashtred Briñola. A proud graduate of Sorsogon State University with a degree in Architectural Drafting, Venus is a member of the Kurit-Lagting Art Collective. She’s not just a digital artist and layout designer; she’s someone who actively blends art, culture, and community in every project she touches.

With her keen eye for detail, stellar organizational skills, and boundless enthusiasm for visual storytelling, Venus is the perfect guide to help participants capture the most meaningful images of Sorsogon. We can’t wait to see what gems she inspires everyone to find!

The Theme: “Through the Lens of Truth”

The local theme, “Through the Lens of Truth: Responsible, Reliable, and Culturally Aware Storytelling,” truly drives home the essence of this event. It’s a powerful reminder that photography is both a creative outlet and an ethical practice. It’s about seeing, understanding, and then sharing with integrity.

Voices from the Heart of the Movement

For the Kurit-Lagting Art Collective, this event transcends mere picture-taking. Judy Azul perfectly encapsulates their vision:

“This Photowalk is more than just taking pictures. It is about reclaiming the power of images to tell stories that matter. As artists, we are committed to socially engaged work that reflects both the beauty and the struggles of our communities.”

Talk about a mission statement!

The Concerned Artists of the Philippines Bicol Chapter echo this sentiment, emphasizing art’s role as a potent voice in society. Choi Carretero and Allan Abrigo shared,

“Art has always been a tool for truth-telling. Through this Photowalk, we hope to highlight photography as a cultural practice that is responsible, reliable, and aware of the social realities of our times.”

Powerful stuff, right?

And what about the youth? Ruth Jocutan of Rhymes of Peg (ROP) and John Vergel Doctor of Delta Beta Omega (DBO) beautifully articulated their perspective:

“Young people are eager to express themselves, and photography gives us a collective voice. By walking together, we show how creativity and collaboration can shed light on the issues that shape our lives.”

It’s inspiring to see the next generation embracing such a thoughtful approach to art.

Even the private sector is stepping up! Gary George Clotario, COO of Gadgetry City, highlighted the synergy between technology and art:

“We support this initiative because technology and art go hand in hand. By equipping local creatives with the tools for visual storytelling, we help them amplify their voices and showcase Sorsogon’s rich culture. At Gadgetry City, we believe every creative deserves the right tools. That is why we offer certified pre-owned, industry-standard devices at an affordable price so artists can keep creating, inspiring, and telling their stories without limits.”

That’s what we call tangible support for the arts!

Don’t Miss Out!

So, if you’re feeling that creative itch, that urge to explore and capture, Sorsogon is calling! While the 50 official slots are already full – yep, it was that popular! – the organizers have announced they will still accept a limited number of walk-in participants on the day of the event. So, grab your camera and your best walking shoes, and be ready to join a global movement right here in Sorsogon!
