Mactan Island may be found just off the coast of Cebu Island. Located across the Mactan Channel from Cebu, the island is linked to the rest of the province by two bridges: the Marcelo Fernan Bridge and the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge. The cities of Lapu-Lapu and Cordova are on opposite halves of the island.The ancient Cebuano epic “Aginid” claims that the island’s original name was “Opong.” Once the island’s inhabitants resorted to piracy, however, its name changed from Mangatang (“to wait in ambush”) to Matan and then to Mactan.Mactan Island is a small coral island off the eastern coast of Cebu in the central Philippines, near the Bohol Strait.
